Kiwi Surges on Hawkish RBNZ Tone Ahead of Jackson Hole
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) has strengthened against the US dollar, reaching near 0.5960 during Asian trading hours on Friday. This move is attributed to a hawkish tone from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), which suggests a possible 25-basis-point rate hike in September. The NZD/USD pair's recent recovery has been well-supported by its position above the 100-day simple moving average and the Bollinger Bands' middle line.
The RBNZ's projected tightening path, as indicated by market pricing of around 94%, is expected to lead to further interest rate hikes. However, MUFG analysts point out that record leveraged fund short positioning in the Kiwi may reflect skepticism over the RBNZ's ability to deliver 100bps of tightening over the next year.
The Jackson Hole Symposium later on Friday will be closely watched for any hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, which could boost the US dollar and act as a headwind for the NZD/USD pair in the near term.
