Korea Tests Stablecoin Tourist Payments through BC Card
BC Card has completed a proof of concept (PoC) for using dollar-based stablecoins in domestic credit card affiliated stores, making it possible for foreign tourists to pay directly without currency exchange. The PoC was conducted with Coinbase and Wavebridge over three months from April, testing the connection between an overseas digital asset wallet and the domestic merchant network.
The companies used actual USDC stored in Coinbase's Base wallet to purchase goods at BC Card QR merchants in Korea. They verified the entire process, including payment cancellation and refund processes, which had been difficult to implement in the existing blockchain environment.
According to Kim Young-woo, president of BC Card, 'This demonstration is a meaningful case that actually verified that domestic card payment infrastructure can operate stably even in global stablecoin payment services.'
