Korean Crypto Volumes Soar as Stocks Plunge by Over 20%
South Korea's cryptocurrency trading volume surged to $964 million on July 28th, an increase of 82% over the previous month's daily average. This spike in activity came as the country's stock market experienced extreme volatility, with the KOSPI benchmark index dropping more than 20% over five days.
The sell-off triggered circuit breakers and resulted in a loss of approximately 864 trillion won in value between July 28th and 29th. On Upbit, trading volume for KRW-USDT increased by 600%, jumping from $20 million to nearly $140 million. The exchange's total volume climbed from $292.7 million to around $743 million before retreating.
The sharp increase in crypto volumes has led some analysts to suggest that investors may have rotated capital into digital assets as a safe-haven strategy. However, others argue that traders may be selling their crypto holdings to meet margin obligations or moving funds overseas to trade Korean equity derivatives.
