Korea's Stock Market Plunges 33%, Then Soars 18% in Bizarre July Reversal

Share

Korea's stock market experienced its worst monthly drop in history in July, plummeting over 33% before rebounding by an astonishing 18% on the last day of the month.

The KOSPI index, which tracks the South Korean stock market, crashed to a record low after news broke that China had begun mass producing homegrown chipmaking tools.

However, the index reversed course and surged 17.91% on July 31, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix leading the charge, gaining 19.57% and 24.05%, respectively.

The market's volatility has left many crypto traders in a precarious position, with Steve Kim of Four Pillars stating that 'many younger investors had taken leveraged positions in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, expecting the rally to continue.'

Kim added that 'once again, domestic retail investors effectively became exit liquidity for overseas capital,' highlighting the risks associated with leveraged trading.
