Kospi Index Sees Historic Volatility Amid South Korean Market Gains

The Kospi Index in South Korea has been on a wild ride this year, with volatility reaching an astonishing 60%. This is almost double the level of Japan's Nikkei 225 index. In fact, the gyrations have been so severe that they've even outdone the notoriously unstable cryptocurrency Bitcoin.

The Korea Exchange has had to trigger its 'circuit breaker' mechanism nine times this year through the end of July to prevent flash crashes and avoid investor panic. This is a significant increase from previous years - there was no such halt in 2025, and just one in 2024.
