KOSPI Surpasses Bitcoin in Volatility as Korea's Stock Market Rages
The KOSPI, South Korea's benchmark stock index, has surpassed Bitcoin in volatility this year. According to data from Bloomberg, the KOSPI's year-to-date return swings have surged to 63%, beating Bitcoin's 48% reading.
This marks a significant reversal, as a national stock index now out-volatilizes an asset long considered the world's most unpredictable. The KOSPI has been affected by the concentration of its market cap in two AI memory chip giants: Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
The index's extreme moves have triggered circuit breakers nine times this year, compared to zero in 2025 and just once in 2024. The latest evidence of KOSPI volatility arrived on August 3, 2026, when the index plunged more than 20% from the open before rebounding by 25% intraday.
This volatility is not limited to a single session; the Korea Exchange has already triggered its market-wide circuit breaker nine times in 2026. Regulators have responded with temporary halts on new leveraged ETF listings, but the structural concentration remains unchanged.
