KOSPI Volatility Surpasses Bitcoin Amid AI Sentiment Shift
The KOSPI, South Korea's benchmark equity index, has seen an unprecedented level of volatility in 2026. Its annualized volatility exceeded 60%, surpassing even Bitcoin's legendary price gyrations and roughly doubling that of Japan's Nikkei.
This extreme volatility is largely due to the significant weight of two semiconductor giants, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together account for over 50% of the KOSPI's total index weight. When AI chip sentiment shifts, the entire South Korean equity market gets affected.
Regulators stepped in on July 29 and 30, 2026, with a package of measures designed to cool the volatility. These included caps on individual investments in single-stock leveraged ETFs and increased trading costs.
