Kraken Boosts Capacity and Stability with Revolutionary Load Testing Approach

When Bitcoin broke through $120,000 for the first time in mid-July 2025, Kraken's platform was put to the test. At that moment, around 135,500 clients experienced errors, with about 40,000 of them encountering issues while funding their accounts. The failure rate reached as high as 11% during this period, which was deemed unacceptable.

However, since then, Kraken has undergone significant changes to its load testing methods. The company set a new standard: the platform must survive at least twice the heaviest load it has ever handled in live trading, on demand, whenever it chooses to test it. This means that every time real client activity sets a new record on the platform, that record becomes the load Kraken tests against next.

Kraken's engineering team built full-scale load tests, known as 'war games,' which simulate a manufactured flood of trading activity on production systems. These tests have proven effective in identifying and addressing constraints before they become major issues. As a result, the platform has seen a significant reduction in failure rates, from around 11% to 0.111%, while carrying more than ten times the load.

One notable example of Kraken's improved performance was during the sharp selloff in February 2026, when every major service continued to run with no incidents despite unprecedented trading activity and platform load. In fact, if a full outage had occurred that day, it would have cost $719,000 an hour.
