Kraken 'Dust Attack' Highlights Compliance Challenges in Crypto Space
A recent 'dust attack' on Kraken, a major cryptocurrency exchange, highlights the challenges of compliance in the crypto space. The incident involved nearly 12,000 small transactions worth only a few cents each, which were enough to trigger account freezes for some customers.
The transfers, which took place from August 17 to 24, targeted Kraken-linked addresses and were linked to a wallet associated with HTX by blockchain intelligence firm Arkham. The exchange framed the activity as an attempt to spread sanctioned funds and trigger compliance reviews on other platforms.
Kraken restored access to affected accounts but chose to hold onto the sanctioned funds rather than releasing them back into circulation. This decision reflects the growing complexity of compliance in the post-sanctions crypto market, where even small transactions can have significant consequences.
