Kyrgyzstan Prepares Digital Som Pilot Amid Crypto Regulation Expansion
Kyrgyzstan is expanding its role in digital finance by piloting a digital version of its national currency, the som. The Central Asian country plans to deepen its involvement in the cryptocurrency sector, including a pilot for the digital som alongside measures aimed at strengthening oversight and establishing infrastructure for stablecoins.
The planned digital som pilot represents one part of Kyrgyzstan's broader push to develop digital financial infrastructure. A central bank digital currency would represent a digital form of the country's national currency rather than a privately issued cryptocurrency.
In addition to the digital som pilot, Kyrgyzstan plans to expand its cryptocurrency regulation and licensing framework. The government is moving to formalize its digital-asset sector by expanding oversight and establishing infrastructure for stablecoins.
