Kyrgyzstan's Crypto Council Visit Highlights Limits of State Backing
Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, visited Kyrgyzstan's crypto council on September 5. The visit came as President Sadyr Japarov set a three-month deadline for new regulations. Officials discussed the risks posed by international sanctions and how they affect the country's virtual-asset market.
CZ praised progress made in the country, including the circulating KGST stablecoin. However, he did not mention USDKG, a separate gold-backed dollar-pegged project whose issuer is on the UK sanctions list.
USDKG provides an example of why state backing cannot guarantee a stablecoin exit. Despite being issued by a state-owned entity, its own FAQ reserves direct redemption for institutional clients, while UK-facing services have separate legal obligations.
