Former Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer Eric Halem has been sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 15 years for his role in a violent cryptocurrency heist. On December 28, 2024, Halem and three accomplices, including one linked to Israeli mob syndicates, impersonated law enforcement to raid a high-rise apartment in Koreatown. They used illegally acquired entry codes and official LAPD handcuffs to restrain the occupants before threatening to kill a 17-year-old boy unless he handed over a hardware wallet containing $350,000 in Bitcoin.

The group fled with the cryptocurrency after the teenager surrendered the drive, but not before leaving behind a trail of evidence that would lead to their downfall. Halem's conviction on felony kidnapping and robbery charges came just three months ago, and his defense team attempted to block sentencing by requesting a new trial, claiming prior counsel had botched the case.

However, Judge Mildred Escobedo denied the request, stating that while the victims were not law-abiding citizens themselves, Halem's decision to use his former police credentials for personal gain was a heinous betrayal of public trust.
