Hunter Biden is launching a cryptocurrency meme coin inspired by his infamous laptop, which made headlines during the 2020 presidential election.
The new coin, called $LAPTOP, will launch on September 9 under Coinbase Global's Base ledger. In an X post, Biden shared a video of media reports referencing the laptop and announced that it would be launched next week.
$LAPTOP is one of many meme coins that have gained popularity in recent times, with some experts warning about their high risk and unpredictability. Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, meme coins derive most of their value from social media hype and speculative sentiment.
Biden's $LAPTOP coin will reportedly issue 1 billion tokens, with 30% held by Biden and the founders and locked for six months. Another 20% will be distributed to holders who lost money on Trump's $TRUMP meme coin and subscribers to Biden's Substack.
