Hunter Biden is venturing into the world of cryptocurrency with a new 'shitcoin' called $LAPTOP, which he plans to launch on September 9th on Base, an Ethereum-based blockchain created by Coinbase. This move has raised eyebrows as it targets individuals who lost money investing in Trump's own token, $TRUMP.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Biden is marketing his new cryptocurrency by offering airdrops to those who lost money on Trump's token, including his Substack subscribers and people who held onto Trump's shitcoin. This approach has been criticized as predatory, using prior investment losses to recruit potential buyers into another highly speculative token.
Meme coins like $LAPTOP typically have little or no underlying economic utility and can experience extreme price swings. The recent performance of Trump's shitcoin is a prime example, having peaked at over $74 in January 2025 but trading at around $2.27 on Monday, according to Forbes.
The project will issue 1 billion tokens, with Biden and other founders set to receive 30% of the supply, locked for six months and then vested over two years. Another 20% will be distributed through airdrops.
