Japanese convenience store chain Lawson is expanding its stablecoin payment pilot to include USDC, USDT, and JPYC. The trial will take place at two Tokyo stores, with a first test scheduled for August 6 at the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store using the HashPort Wallet and JPYC.

The second test on August 17 will use MetaMask to pay with USDC, USDT, or JPYC at the Lawson Gate City Osaki Atrium store. The pilot aims to evaluate how the company's point-of-sale (POS) system connects with digital wallets, processes settlements, and assesses transaction speed.

Lawson has stated that it will examine day-to-day store operations, including POS integration and settlement procedures, before deciding whether stablecoin payments are suitable for wider deployment. The trial removes the need for dedicated payment terminals by processing wallet barcodes through existing checkout systems using Canal Payment Services' PAYTREE gateway.
