Lawson Scans Barcode for Stablecoin Payment
A Tokyo-based convenience store, Lawson, has successfully completed a trial for stablecoin payments using its standard point-of-sale register. The demonstration involved a payment of 322 yen in the JPYC stablecoin, which was made by scanning a barcode from HashPort Wallet on the customer's phone.
The payment process was facilitated through HashPort Wallet for Biz and Canal Payment Service's PAYTREE gateway, with no dedicated stablecoin terminal added to the till. The trial was conducted at the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store in Tokyo and marked the first stablecoin payment linked to a convenience-store POS in Japan.
HashPort CEO Seihaku Yoshida said that the demonstration featured gasless settlement, which is based on HashPort's own technology. However, neither claim has been independently verified.
