Lawson Tests Stablecoin Payments with JPYC in Tokyo Retail Trial
Japan's first stablecoin payment was tested at Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store in Tokyo on August 6, 2026. The trial used JPYC, a yen-pegged token issued by JPYC Inc., which launched on October 27, 2025. The test ran with telecom partner KDDI and wallet provider HashPort, who handled the transaction through their non-custodial app.
The process was similar to existing Japanese barcode payment apps, with one extra confirmation tap from the customer's side. Payment data moved through PAYTREE, a multi-code gateway run by Canal Payment Service, and settled on Polygon, a blockchain network.
HashPort CEO Seihaku Yoshida stated that two achievements were demonstrated during the test: the payment fit into Lawson's existing POS setup with little to no hardware change, and the transaction ran without gas fees for the shopper.
