Lawson Tokyo Conducts First Stablecoin Payment Trial Without Dedicated Terminal
Tokyo-based HashPort conducted a trial of stablecoin payments at a Lawson convenience store in Tokyo. The demonstration showed that customers could pay using a barcode in their non-custodial HashPort Wallet, which was scanned by the standard point-of-sale register.
The payment settled on Polygon and used the yen stablecoin JPYC, with no dedicated terminal added to the till. This trial marked the first time retail stablecoin acceptance had been achieved without a QR code or dedicated payment terminal in Japan.
HashPort said this was also the first gasless stablecoin payment in Japan, but neither claim has been independently verified. The demonstration was part of Tokyo Lawson's effort to expand its use of stablecoins, with further trials planned throughout August.
