Lawson Tries Stablecoin Payments at Japanese Convenience Stores
Lawson, one of Japan's largest convenience store chains, is set to pilot stablecoin payments at two locations in Tokyo. The trial will utilize the yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC and the digital wallet HashPort Wallet. This is reportedly the first time a stablecoin payment trial has been integrated with point-of-sale (POS) register systems in Japan.
The trials will take place on August 6 at the Lawson Takanawa Gateway City store, which will test payments using JPYC through HashPort Wallet. On August 17, the Lawson Gate City Osaki Atrium store will verify payments using MetaMask, supporting JPYC as well as USDC and USDT.
The payment flow involves users displaying a payment barcode on their smartphone wallet, which is then scanned by the store's POS register. Transaction data is transmitted to the wallet provider through PAYTREE, a multi-code payment gateway operated by Canal Payment Service.
