Layer-1 Blockchain Networks Ontology and Injective Hit by Suspected Exploits
Two Layer-1 blockchain networks, Ontology and Injective, faced disruptions in block production around August 31 due to security concerns. The suspected exploit on Injective is linked to $4.9 million. According to @WuBlockchain, Ontology initially paused its mainnet as a precautionary measure before reporting on September 1 that it had identified malicious activity targeting the network. However, user assets were not compromised.
Injective, incubated by Binance, experienced a more prolonged interruption, stopping block production for about three hours and 42 minutes before network activity resumed. QuickNode recorded a network-wide stall and subsequently reported an emergency patch. Injective resumed operations without rolling back the blockchain history.
The incident highlights the operational risks faced by blockchain ecosystems that depend on continuous block production. Even when user assets remain secure, a prolonged halt can affect applications, exchanges, decentralized finance protocols, and other services built on top of a network.
