Layer 2 Solutions: How Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base Differ From Each Other
Ethereum's high transaction costs and slow confirmation times have long been a concern for crypto users. To address this, Layer 2 solutions have emerged as an innovative way to process transactions faster and cheaper without sacrificing Ethereum's security.
Three popular Layer 2 solutions are Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base, each with its own unique approach and strengths.
Arbitrum is one of the oldest and most trusted names in this space, developed by Offchain Labs and launched in 2021. Its native token ARB allows users to participate in network governance and development.
Optimism, on the other hand, has built an open-source technology called the OP Stack, which enables other teams to launch their own scaling networks. This vision of a 'Superchain' aims to connect multiple Layer 2 solutions seamlessly.
Base is the latest entry in this space, developed by Coinbase and launched in August 2023. It's built on the OP Stack but is gradually decentralizing its control. Unlike Arbitrum and Optimism, Base doesn't have its own native token yet, using ETH for gas instead.
