Layer 2 Tokens Plummet Despite Ethereum Scaling Growth
Ethereum's Layer 2 tokens have been hit hard over the past month, with nearly all major governance tokens experiencing double-digit declines. MEGA led the downturn at -34.8%, followed by ZK at -27.3%, STRK at -22%, and OP at -19.5%. This is despite the overall scaling ecosystem growing and transaction counts increasing.
The paradox lies in that more users and activity do not always translate to higher token prices. Many Layer 2 tokens provide governance rights or rewards for participating, but they don't typically receive a cut of revenue generated by the protocol. As a result, even with increased fees and transactions, token values may not necessarily rise.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, previously questioned whether the original Layer 2 roadmap still made sense. He suggested that L2 teams should focus on carving out a niche, such as specialized VMs for privacy or extreme speed, rather than simply scaling Ethereum.
