LayerZero and a16z crypto Unveil Akita to Combat Quantum Threat
LayerZero and a16z crypto are teaming up to combat the growing threat of quantum computers to blockchain networks. A new partnership between the two companies has resulted in the development of Akita, a cryptographic tool designed to make zero-knowledge infrastructure more resistant to future quantum attacks.
Akita uses lattice-based cryptography, a type of mathematics being used for post-quantum security. This new approach can reduce proof sizes by up to 65-80 KB compared to existing methods, and speed up the proving process by 2-3 times while cutting memory usage in half.
The launch of Akita comes as the U.S. is stepping up its push into quantum computing. The partnership between LayerZero and a16z crypto has already seen a major deployment with Jolt, a zero-knowledge virtual machine that uses ZK proofs to show that a computation was done correctly. By integrating Akita into Jolt, a16z crypto has created a new version called Lattice Jolt, which adds a quantum-resistant layer.
While the threat of quantum computers may seem distant, the industry is already taking steps to prepare for it. Ethereum developers are targeting 2029 for a quantum-resistant base layer, and Bitcoin developers are exploring post-quantum upgrades.
