LayerZero Crypto Migration Hits $15 Billion as Major Players Abandon Interoperability Network
The LayerZero crypto migration has reached $15 billion as several major players abandon the interoperability network for Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol. The migration began after an attacker exploited a single cross-chain message, draining $292 million from Kelp DAO on April 18. This exploit led to a series of departures, with BitGo moving $7.4 billion in WBTC and Wyoming's Stable Token Commission switching its Frontier Stable Token to Chainlink CCIP.
Nethermind, an Ethereum engineering firm, has also exited LayerZero as a Decentralized Verifier Network operator and joined Chainlink. The company cited a 'long-term decision' to consolidate its cross-chain operations around Chainlink CCIP. LayerZero's native ZRO token has fallen to $302 million in market capitalization.
The migration is due to a structural difference between the two protocols, with Chainlink CCIP baking security into the protocol rather than relying on app developers. This approach has earned it SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 certifications.
