Leveraged Bulls Face Whack at Bitcoin's $57,000 Threshold
Bitcoin's price has been a concern for traders holding bullish futures bets, as the $57,000 level looms large. According to Joao Wedson, CEO of Alphractal, if Bitcoin trades down into this area, 'we could see a massive wave of long liquidations.'
The reason is that at this price, positions would turn underwater enough that exchanges may have to liquidate them, unless traders step in with more collateral. This risk is amplified by thin trading volumes, which can make it harder for the market to absorb these liquidations at stable prices.
Bitcoin's current price is already a concern, as it has only cut prices in half since its highs above $126,000 last October. Analysts at Bitfinex note that the cryptocurrency is showing mid-to-late bear market characteristics, with price trading between the long-term holder realized price of $52,699 and the short-term holder realized price of $67,176.
The key level to watch is the median realized price near $63,200, which has provided support over the past two weeks. If this level breaks, the June low of $57,803 could come back into focus.
