Leveraged Funds' Net Bearish Exposure Drops, But No Broad Institutional Bullish Turn
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission's (CFTC) latest report on futures positions showed a significant drop in leveraged short positions, but it did not deliver the bullish confirmation that traders were expecting. The July 28 snapshot revealed that combined CME Bitcoin exposure for leveraged funds became 5,566.5 BTC-equivalent less net bearish week over week.
At the same time, asset managers' combined directional net long fell by 2,204.3 BTC-equivalent over the same period. The CFTC's figures document a meaningful reduction in leveraged funds' net bearish exposure, but with asset managers pulling back simultaneously, this futures-only snapshot is not proof of a broad institutional bullish turn.
The report cannot distinguish between directional buying and basis trades, expiry rolls, or hedges, making it difficult to understand the motives behind these changes. The CFTC's methodology classifies traders by their predominant business purpose reported on Form 40, but it does not provide specific information about each position.
