Liga MX Overhauls Governance Ahead of 2026 World Cup
Liga MX has appointed Francisco Iturbide as its new president, marking a significant shift in the league's governance. Iturbide started as an intern 11 years ago and worked his way up to Director General of Competitions, Operations, and Development before taking on the top role.
The appointment comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the US, and Canada. Liga MX is modeling its new governance framework after the English Premier League, with a focus on operational independence and equal voting rights for all 18 clubs.
The league has also created a new legal entity, Liga Mexicana de Futbol Profesional A.C., which will allow it to negotiate commercial deals without federation bureaucracy. This move is expected to attract international sponsors, broadcasters, and investors during the World Cup.
