Lighter Bitcoin Price Crash Reveals Exchange's Shallow Order Book
A Bitcoin sell order worth approximately $67 million briefly pushed the price down to $47,600 on decentralized perpetuals exchange Lighter.
The incident occurred while Bitcoin was trading above $69,000 on major venues, one of its strongest intraday rallies in weeks.
The $67 million sell order wiped out all available bids on Lighter's thinner-than-usual book, causing the local price to spiral downwards with no offsetting liquidity to absorb it.
Pseudonymous Web3 developer 0xTimberJ explained that even a modestly sized order can sweep through multiple price levels in shallow markets, producing extreme short-lived prints that don't correspond to prevailing market prices elsewhere.
