Lighter Exchange Hit by $67M Bitcoin Sell Order Crash
A significant sell order on decentralized perpetuals exchange Lighter caused a brief crash in Bitcoin's price to $47,600. The incident occurred while the rest of the market rallied, with BTC trading above $69,000 on major venues.
The sell order was worth approximately $67 million and comprised 1,000 BTC, overwhelming available bids on the exchange's thinner-than-usual order book. According to pseudonymous Web3 developer 0xTimberJ, this caused the local price to 'spiral' without sufficient liquidity to absorb it.
The crash was short-lived, with prices recovering almost instantly once bids reappeared. This type of flash crash is not unusual on venues with shallow order books, where even modest-sized orders can sweep through multiple price levels.
Lighter's liquidity has deteriorated significantly since its token airdrop concluded in late 2025. Monthly volume fell from $292 billion to $70 billion, making the platform vulnerable to similar incidents.
