Lighter's Buyback Surge

The price of Lighter (LIT) surged 3.31% over the last ~20 hours due to a combination of factors, including a widely shared buyback and burn narrative.

A social report on July 29 around 6:25pm UTC stated that Lighter executed a large buyback of 16M LIT tokens and started a quarterly burn program. This news was enough to attract new long interest, forcing shorts to cover and driving the price up by several percentage points quickly.

The market's position on Hyperliquid showed that roughly 70-80% of top traders were net short LIT, with one wallet holding about 35% of the short side notional (around $10-12M dollars gross). This concentration of risk increased the chance of a rapid price movement in response to the buyback and burn narrative.

The macro environment and altcoin rotation also played a role in Lighter's price movement, with the token being pushed around by macro volatility and futures liquidations. However, the tokenomics narrative proved to be supportive on a slightly longer horizon.
