Lightning Network Breaks $1B Monthly Volume Barrier

The Bitcoin Lightning Network processed an estimated $1.1 billion in monthly transaction volume in November 2025, according to River's report.

Sam Wouters, director of marketing at River, attributed this growth primarily to exchanges and a growing number of businesses accepting Bitcoin payments, rather than speculative activity tied to price momentum.

The Lightning Network, which functions as a second layer on top of the Bitcoin blockchain, enables payments between parties that settle in seconds. Standard Bitcoin blocks take approximately 10 minutes on average to be confirmed on the base layer, limiting Bitcoin's practicality for smaller or time-sensitive payments.

Total transaction count in 2025 came in below 2023 levels, when monthly Lightning transactions peaked at 6.6 million in August of that year. This earlier peak was driven by experiments with micropayments in gaming and messaging applications.
