Liquid Breach: 4,000 BTC Siphoned as 'White Hats' Claim Responsibility
Liquid's Bitcoin layer-2 network suffered a major breach on September 6, 2026, when approximately 4,000 BTC were transferred out of its federation wallet. This represents about 95% of all Bitcoin pegged to Liquid.
The funds were consolidated into a single address with an on-chain message claiming the actors were 'white hats' and inviting Liquid to contact them.
Liquid described the parties as purported white hat hackers, but Ledger's Chief Technology Officer, Charles Guillemet, has questioned this label, comparing it to the Ronin hack in which attackers compromised validator keys to steal $625 million.
