Liquid Heist: Hackers Swipe $319 Million in BTC
A massive heist on Liquid Network has seen hackers make off with approximately 4,000 BTC worth around $319 million. The thieves claim to be 'white hats', but their motives remain unclear.
According to an unverified OP_RETURN message, the attackers stated: 'we are whitehats. contact us on chain.' However, experts have raised questions about the security of Liquid's sidechain, citing potential vulnerabilities in its mechanics.
The funds were withdrawn via Sideswap, but it was later revealed that a bug in the Elements software led to the creation of L-BTC, which was then exploited by the attackers.
Blockstream has paused bridge nodes and instructed exchanges to halt LBTC deposits and withdrawals as they attempt to contact the attackers and rectify the situation.
