Liquid Network Peg-Out Mechanism Exposes Bridge Accounting Risk
The Liquid Network recently recovered 3,400 BTC from its federation wallet after it was taken over the weekend. However, this recovery does not resolve the more serious issue at hand - a potential accounting problem with its peg-out mechanism.
A SideSwap customer claimed to have transmitted 4,000 L-BTC to its peg-out service on Sunday, September 6. The federation's wallet then released approximately 3,996 BTC, but it was later discovered that the authorization key was not stolen and the transaction was valid from a technical standpoint.
The problem lies in the fact that the Elements software enabled the generation of invalid L-BTC, which were then redeemed for actual BTC. This raises concerns about the integrity of the federation's reserves and the potential for similar incidents to occur in the future.
