Liquid Network Recovers $269M After White-Hat Hackers Return Most Bitcoin
A security incident on the Liquid Network resulted in the loss of nearly $269 million worth of Bitcoin, but most of it has been recovered. The actors behind the withdrawal, who described themselves as 'white-hat hackers,' returned approximately 3,400 BTC to the Liquid Federation wallet.
This recovery represents about 85% of the initial withdrawal amount. However, a significant portion of nearly $47 million remains in the actors' control, with no clear explanation for why they retained these funds.
Blockstream's bridge nodes had been patched before the repayment, and the company assured the actors that the funds were 'safe to return.' Nevertheless, Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet questioned the white-hat description due to the lack of disclosed terms covering the retained Bitcoin.
