Liquid Staking Platforms: A Trade-Off Between Returns and Risk
Liquid staking platforms offer a way to earn rewards on your cryptocurrency holdings without locking up your funds. Instead of holding onto your coins, you deposit them into a liquid staking platform and receive a token that represents your stake. This token can be used freely in DeFi applications while still earning interest.
There are several liquid staking platforms available, each with its own balance between returns and risk. The biggest name is Lido, which controls around $20-27 billion in assets and offers an approximate annual percentage yield (APY) of 3-4%. Binance is close behind, controlling around $27.5 billion combined.
Other platforms include Rocket Pool, Coinbase, ether.fi, and Jito, each with its own unique approach to liquid staking. Some platforms prioritize decentralization, while others offer higher returns through restaking or MEV yield.
However, it's essential to note that none of these platforms are risk-free. Smart contract bugs, token pegging issues, and slashing risks all pose potential threats to investors.
