Liquid's $318M BTC Peg-Out Sparks Whitehat Debate
Liquid Network's recent peg-out of approximately 3,996 BTC has raised eyebrows in the crypto community. The transfer, valued at around $318.4 million, was facilitated by SideSwap's Peg-out Authorization Key (PAK), but the key itself and other authorization keys remained secure.
The actors behind the withdrawal described themselves as 'whitehats,' claiming to be legitimate researchers who had discovered a vulnerability in Liquid's bridge. However, Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet challenged this description, pointing out that white hats typically disclose vulnerabilities before moving substantial collateral.
Gillemet compared the situation to past incidents like the 2022 Ronin bridge attack and the 2023 Euler Finance exploit, where attackers later communicated with affected projects. However, in this case, most of the withdrawn BTC remained concentrated, and no confirmed agreement or asset return has been reported.
The central issue remains whether the actors' 'whitehat' claim matches their actions. The Liquid Network is investigating how the authorization process permitted the peg-out and whether the withdrawn BTC will be returned.
