Litecoin Aims for DeFi Growth with LitVM Smart Contract Rollout
Litecoin is taking steps to expand its capabilities beyond payment processing through the introduction of smart contracts via LitVM, an EVM-compatible layer-2. This new architecture will execute transactions off-chain before settling them back on Layer-1, preserving Litecoin's established security model.
The LiteForge public testnet has already processed over 140 million transactions across 11 million addresses since April 2026. The milestone suggests that the developers have been actively exploring the network and testing its expanded functionality.
Despite this technical progress, the DeFi ecosystem on Litecoin holds only $700,000 in total value locked, indicating a gap between application growth and technical advancements. LitVM's architecture expands Litecoin's capabilities, but broader ecosystem activity must grow before these technical advantages translate into meaningful network utility.
