Litecoin vs. Bitcoin: Speed, Security, and Use Cases Diverge
Bitcoin and Litecoin have different use cases and characteristics despite their similarities.
Litecoin is four times faster than Bitcoin in block confirmation, but its Lightning Network can handle a significant portion of payment volume instantly and almost free. In contrast, Litecoin's fees are generally lower, ranging from fractions of a cent to 15 cents, although they can be affected by congestion on the network.
Litecoin has experienced security issues, including a bug in its MWEB privacy feature that was exploited in March 2026. On the other hand, Bitcoin's base layer has been secure since its launch in 2009.
The two cryptocurrencies have different institutional backing, with Bitcoin's spot ETF holding tens of billions and Litecoin's pulling in only $5.5 million by mid-2026. However, some public companies have invested in Litecoin despite its lower market cap.
