Loeb's Third Point Bets Big on Former Crypto Miners' AI Infrastructure Play

Share

Billionaire Dan Loeb's Third Point LLC has placed strategic bets on four former cryptocurrency mining companies that have transformed into AI infrastructure providers.

The hedge fund manager has increased his ownership in Hut 8 to $151.8 million, a 51% increase, and established new stakes in Riot Platforms, Core Scientific, and Applied Digital.

These former miners have shifted their focus from cryptocurrency mining to providing AI computing services, leveraging their existing data center facilities and power infrastructure for more predictable revenue streams with superior profit margins.

The companies' recent financial results demonstrate the momentum behind this transformation, with Hut 8 generating $74.9 million in second-quarter revenue, an 81% year-over-year increase, while Core Scientific achieved a 109% revenue expansion to $164.2 million during the same period.
