Lords Vote Forces UK Government into Crypto Strategy
A recent vote in the House of Lords has given a major boost to the UK's crypto strategy, forcing the government to develop a formal national approach to digital assets within a set timeframe.
The amendment, moved by Baroness Neville-Rolfe, inserts a new clause titled 'Digital assets strategy' after clause 46 of the Financial Services and Markets Bill. The clause pushes the government toward publishing a formal digital assets plan within a defined window after the bill becomes law.
According to the official division record published by Parliament, peers voted 194 to 138 in favor of the amendment, marking a rare defeat for the government on financial legislation moving through Parliament.
The result suggests that lawmakers increasingly view formal oversight of virtual currencies and blockchain-based assets as an issue worth spending political capital on.
