Louisa County Slows Cryptocurrency Mining Plans Amid Zoning Hurdles
The Louisa County Board of Supervisors revisited the discussion on data centers and cryptocurrency mining in their latest meeting. The board approved the first reading of ordinance 26-2, which is a moratorium on new permit applications for development of cryptocurrency mining projects within unincorporated areas of Louisa County.
The ordinance will not allow any permits to be issued until zoning has had time to develop its rules and regulations concerning the construction of cryptocurrency mining facilities. This move comes after the board previously approved an 18-month moratorium on data center development in unincorporated areas, which is set to expire soon.
Louisa County Supervisor Chair Kevin Hardin explained that the ordinance is intended to give zoning time to develop rules and regulations for cryptocurrency mining facilities. The next step will be a second reading of the proposed ordinance at the board's meeting on September 15th, where they will also consider waiving the third reading to approve it.
