Louisa County Weighs Data Center Regulations Amid Crypto Mining Concerns
The Louisa County Board of Supervisors is holding a public hearing on Tuesday to discuss data center regulations in the county. The meeting comes after the board approved Ordinance 26-1, which imposed an 18-month moratorium on new data center development.
The previous public hearing where the ordinance was approved featured discussion about including cryptocurrency mining protections within the same ordinance. However, with the draft already complete, the board chose not to revise it and instead pass a separate law addressing crypto mining concerns.
Crypto miners use high-powered computers to finalize transactions for blockchain networks like Bitcoin. A major concern voiced during the previous hearing was the substantial energy consumption of these facilities, which led some supervisors to push for regulations on crypto mining projects.
