Low Wages Limit India's Crypto Investors
India's high participation in cryptocurrency markets is not necessarily reflective of large investments. The country ranked first overall in Chainalysis' 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, but its low average weekly earnings and long working hours limit investable income for crypto users.
Average weekly earnings in India are ₹5,675, while workers put in an average of 41.7 hours per week, according to the Periodic Labour Force Survey data from 2024. This creates a scenario where individuals may participate in small-scale investments rather than holding large portfolios.
Crypto platforms like CoinDCX allow recurring investments starting at ₹100 with daily, weekly, and monthly SIP options, which can enable smaller and more incremental positions for investors. However, the country's tax structure adds another constraint, subjecting virtual digital asset gains to a 30% tax, along with applicable surcharges and cess.
Market analyst Sunil Gurjar noted that India's high participation in crypto markets does not necessarily translate into wealth creation. The figures raise questions for Indian investors: does limited disposable income encourage small-scale participation in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, or does it limit the capital households can deploy?
