LSE Partners with Kraken to Tokenize UK Equities
The London Stock Exchange (LSE) has partnered with Payward, Kraken's parent company, to bring UK equities onchain. However, a crucial catch, British investors are excluded from this new digital highway.
The LSE's xStocks framework will tokenize the 100 largest UK-listed companies via a Jersey-based tracker certificate on a blockchain. This allows for global access across over 110 countries, but only if you're not a UK investor.
LSEG shares fell approximately 2% in early London trading after the announcement, suggesting that the market is skeptical about this new development. The xStocks framework has seen significant activity since June 2025, with over $40 billion in cumulative trading volume and around $20 billion settled on-chain, but it remains a synthetic instrument.
The LSE's CEO, Julia Hoggett, emphasized that tokenization has the potential to change how investors access financial markets, but it must develop in a way that preserves trust, rights, and regulatory frameworks. The partnership with Payward is seen as a strategic move by the LSE to integrate traditional finance with blockchain technology.
The real test of this partnership will come when natively issued equity tokens are introduced, offering full fungibility and the same rights as traditional stock. This could be a game-changer for institutional adoption, but it's still unclear if the UK regulatory framework will allow for this to happen.
