LSEG Expands Equity Markets with Tokenized UK Shares
The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) is planning to launch tokenized UK shares, allowing for global access to London-listed shares around the clock. The move marks a significant step towards embracing crypto assets and expanding the reach of equity markets.
LSEG will partner with Payward, parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, to explore new ways to trade on equity markets. The collaboration aims to list xStocks, tokenized representations of publicly traded shares, on LSE 24 in 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
Tokenization has the potential to revolutionize stock markets by enabling shares to be traded 24/7 and settled instantly, boosting liquidity and reducing transaction costs. However, proponents of tokenization must ensure that it develops in a way that preserves market integrity and investor trust.
