Lummis Faces Deadline on Crypto Regulation Bill

Share

Senator Cynthia Lummis has been working to push through the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill aimed at drawing clear regulatory lines around digital assets in the US. The revised draft of the bill, unveiled on July 22, 2026, divides oversight responsibilities between the SEC and CFTC.

The addition of a new provision prohibiting federal officials from issuing or sponsoring digital assets came directly from negotiations with Democratic lawmakers who raised ethical concerns about conflicts of interest at the highest levels of government. The bipartisan nature of the bill is evident in its passage through the Senate Banking Committee, which cleared it with a 15-9 vote in May 2026.

However, with only ten days remaining before the August recess, the chances of the bill crossing the finish line are looking increasingly slim, according to Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Lummis remains hopeful for a deal and has warned that failing to pass the bill could push comprehensive digital asset legislation into the 2030s.

The prohibition on federal officials sponsoring digital assets also carries weight beyond ethics, as it signals to the market that the regulatory environment won't be subject to the whims of whoever occupies the Oval Office. Proponents argue that without clear domestic rules, crypto activity will continue migrating overseas, undermining US leadership in financial innovation.
