Lummis Warns CLARITY Act Delay Could Hinder Crypto Regulation for Years
US Senator Cynthia Lummis has issued a warning to her colleagues in Congress that failure to pass the CLARITY Act could delay comprehensive market structure legislation until 2030. The bill, which aims to eliminate regulatory ambiguity surrounding digital assets across the United States, has been stuck in the Senate for over twelve months after clearing the House in July 2025.
Lummis emphasized that missing this Congressional window would mean waiting years for jobs, investment capital, and tax revenue associated with crypto regulation. She pointed out that the next real opportunity to bring market structure legislation back up is indeed 2030, which would be a significant delay given the growing importance of digital assets.
The CLARITY Act seeks to establish clear criteria for determining whether a digital asset qualifies as a security or commodity and delineate jurisdictional boundaries between the SEC and CFTC. However, Democratic lawmakers continue to insist on incorporating ethics-related provisions, which remains unresolved.
