Lyon's Champions League Dreams Hang by a Thread After Crushing Defeat
Olympique Lyonnais's Champions League ambitions suffered a major setback as they lost 2-1 to Sparta Prague in their qualifying round match at epet ARENA on August 4.
The French club dominated much of the first half but couldn't create clear-cut chances, and it was Sparta who took the lead when Matěj Suchomel turned the ball into his own net in the 45th minute. However, the Czech side came out transformed after halftime, scoring two goals in six minutes to turn the match around.
Ernest Nuamah, the 22-year-old Ghanaian forward who joined Lyon in 2024 from FC Nordsjælland, made his comeback after a severe knee injury that kept him out for approximately 13 months. He came on as a substitute in the 75th minute but didn't find the scoresheet.
Lyon now faces an uphill task to overturn the one-goal deficit at home in the second leg just to stay alive in the third qualifying round.
