Maharashtra State Considers Tokenizing Power Grid for Revenue-Generating Assets
India's Maharashtra state is exploring tokenization of its power grid to raise funds for new transmission lines and solar energy storage facilities. The proposed model would see up to 50% of selected electricity transmission assets tokenized, allowing investors to receive a share of the revenue generated by Maharashtra Transco.
The plan, outlined by Praveen Pardeshi, chief economic adviser to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to address the state's mismatch between solar power output and transmission capacity. Currently, Maharashtra produces more solar electricity than it can use during certain periods, resulting in low-cost electricity being wasted.
The proposed DELTA Act would make Maharashtra the first Indian state to adopt legislation specifically covering blockchain-based property tokenization. The act would set rules for how income is calculated, distributed, and recorded, as well as define what rights investors would have if revenue falls below expectations.
